Tasogare Otome Amnesia (Dusk Maiden) 8-10

As the showdown with Shadow Yuuko unfolds and her nature is explained - the spirit manifestation of Yuuko's horrific memories - the show goes deep and becomes intensely poignant.

Episode 10 in particular is heart-racing and heart-wrenching, as we finally are given a glimpse into Yuuko's past. In doing so we learn more about what the Shadow is and what kind of person Yuuko was.

It is in these episodes, if memory serves, that we see a divergence from the manga. I can't recall any such close encounter (at least not as close as in episodes 9-10) where the whole back story is revealed. Maybe didn't put it in the manga, but it's here and makes for an excellent adaptive mechanism.

There are some bad alternative endings out there. The last arc in Claymore comes to mind. But here, the changes are almost an improvement - or at least add a pathos to the series that is plenty fulfilling.
