Enter the Queen. |
I just wrote an angry unsatisfied review of Guilty Crown and then turned on this ep. Now THIS is great writing.
Chihaya has recovered from the illness that kept her out of team play and she and the gang are now into the individual tournaments. Since they are all different levels, they all play in different brackets.
This is when Chihaya finally meets the reigning "Queen" - the best female player in Japan (read: world). It turns out to be the mystery girl from Omi Jingu. They bump heads in only the second round and Chihaya gets a real test.
Chihaya almost looks chibi... |
Instead of a sickly-sweet storyline where Chihaya finds herself good enough to take on the Queen, Chihaya gets drubbed for most the episode. She is forced to wrestle with the difficulty of playing someone incredibly strong. It takes quite a while for her to remember her last seriously drubbing. In the end, she slowly starts to take a stand, but is it too late to gain a victory?
Queen. Moe-mode. |
One gets the sense that some inevitability may be written in here, with some absurd comeback taking place in the next episode. But i am hopeful. Given that the writer saw fit to let Chihaya stumble in the team play (and actually win by seeing her team preform well in her absence) and i think it would work well to let her lose here, too. A hopeful loss would better set up the showdown in the Queen Tournament that we all can see coming. Either way, this show remains incredibly enjoyable.
