Long Vowels - Usagi Drop

One of the best shows of the Fall 2011 anime season has been, without doubt, Usagi Drop うさぎドロップ. The story of a 30 something single guy (Daikichi) who suddenly ends up taking care of his recently deceased grandfather's six year old daughter (Rin) is an endearing look at parenthood, family, and what makes the struggles and trials of life worth facing.

What does this have to do with long vowels? Episode 9 aired just the other day and there was a humorous scene where Kouki, Rin's school friend, runs into the room to announce that the TV news anchor said that the "trains are pooping". Daikichi gives Kouki a confused look for a moment before realizing the problem. He points out that what they said was "operating" not "pooping".

While not obvious from the subtitles, you can hear in the audio that the mistake little Kouki has made has to do with a long vowel. Where the TV news anchor had said running, which contains a long vowel, Kouki heard a short vowel. The result is a dramatic and humorous change in meaning.

Kouki seems unconcerned by the revelation and, like a typical six-year-old, continues to run around the house shouting, "The trains are pooping, the trains are pooping." So, mind your long vowels kids!

  1. This is a great series. I actually read the Korean release of the manga. The second half is mostly full of romance drama though.

  2. did you read to the end? the end is so weird...

i am hoping that the anime stops before the time skip.

  3. Usagi Drop is so cute. I'm really enjoying it. I've read the manga up until the timeskip but I've heard about the ending (stupid spoilers). I'm kinda wondering how they're going to end the anime or if its getting a second season. That said my favorite anime from this season is probably Mawaru Penguindrum. Have you seen any of that?

  4. That seriously just made my day. Plus, I really enjoy that we can now understand the joke. Yay learning!

  5. @Joel i have seen some of Mawaru. I have been keeping up with gg's subs of it, but stalled watching on ep 2 because i am just following too many shows right now (Ikoku Meiro, Usagi Drop, Hanasaku Iroha, Dantalian, and No. 6). i will try to catch up on it later.

  6. That looks like a very entertaining show! I am going to have to watch it sometime. I love the fact that class opened your eyes to a comedic scene in the anime that really made no sense in the subtitles. Interesting stuff indeed.

  7. Best show not including Nichijou (日常) obviously :smuggest guy in town:.

I remember reading the manga for this but then dropping it after the timeskip, so I'll probably watch this series eventually as it was cute. Any episodes that are pre-timeskip anyway.

The fact that it's basically the closest thing to a よつばと! anime helps to fuel my interest.

  8. ^oh man, i couldn't get past the second EP of Nichijou.

and all of this season of UD is pre-skip, so it's all good. Noitamina shows are usually the best.

    i love よつばと!

  9. O wow, let weeaboos gather in this thread.

Usagi Drop is scheduled for 11 episodes, so it will stop before time skip. And also there is a film adaptation that came out not too long ago.

    About noitama, Fractale says otherwise...

Tiger and Bunny is actually selling most blurays atm, and I find it the best show this season.

  10. ah, right, Fractale. made it through...one EP. and i said usually, not always. Ano Hana last season was quite good.

I hear good stuff about Tiger and Bunny, but i am more into the slightly, uh, different shows. i.e. have been loving Dantalian and Ikoku Meiro.
