Jormungand 5

At the start of the season, I was quite prepared to totally disregard Jormungand. I had thought that it was going to mostly be retarded shounen drivel that glorified arms dealers in the way some series glorify gangsters. That doesn't necessarily make a series bad, but it does make it cliche and unbelievable.

Jormungand has been surprising in how it has tossed heady narrative content for the great action sequences. While there are hints of the absurd at the edges (Koko's whole "I sell weapons for world peace" garbage is just that, garbage), a number of the arcs in this are rather compelling.

Episode five brings one of these to the fore. Up till now, Jonah has been quite the enigma. He hates arms and arms dealers but is still somehow by Koko's side as a quasi-bodyguard. What gives? In this episode we find out why. It isn't just the loss of his parents, but something just as deeply injurious that both explains his relationship with Koko as well as with her somewhat twisted and morally aloof brother Casper (a fitting name for his ghost-like appearance).

While you can give or take any of the early episodes in the series, this is the pivot piece (or the first such piece) in the story. From here, things can only get more interesting.
